Floral Fables ~ a growing collection

As with any creative body of work things often stem from moments of simplicity and quiet when you brain has switched off from the ‘to do’ list, and for me, fallen deeply into the silence of muddy hands in soil and the gentle hum of lawn movers three neighbours down.

I managed years ago to persuade my husband to build us ~ aka me :) some raised beds at the back of the garden. I’m no gardener and after staring into the abyss of a number of books we both decided, in perfect amateur style to throw in a box of wildflower seeds and just see what happens.

What grew that summer was beyond anything we could have planned. Happy bees purred amongst the variety of blooms and every day seemed different to the last. It was only when my obsession peaked after a few weeks of wandering around the edges that I began to see each little evolution as small individual floral stories.

Little families all getting to know each other, strong willed daisies sitting amongst the calendula, some holding each other up and self seeders who had wandered out of the bed to grow amongst the gravel, calling back and waving at their fellow flowers.

It wasn’t just their relationships that sparked creativity for me too, it was also them as growing individuals. I saw their empowerment to root in the earth, their self belief to reach for the light, and this beautiful lack of need for permission from any other being as to whether they belonged there. They already knew they did. This felt a really powerful story to witness.

These little stories grew in my head and then into art. This is how Floral Fables began.

I hope these floral stories remind you, gently but also powerfully, of the empowerment you should feel in being seen and taking up space just for you. To grow like the flowers, just as wild, just as free and with loving, strong self belief.

Next time you walk past wild flowers watch how they never ask for permission to grow, and how beautiful it is to see that empowerment.

xx
